A sensitisation programme on HIV was organised for hairdressers in the South Tongu District by the District H.I.V focal person to educate them on HIV prevention, transmission, testing, and stigma reduction. Hairdressers interact with many people in their daily work. They may occasionally come into contact with sharp tools such as blades, needles, and other instruments that can cause cuts or injuries on the 9th of September, 2026.
The programme focused on creating awareness about how HIV is transmitted and how it can be prevented. Participants learned the importance of using clean, properly sterilised equipment, avoiding sharing sharp instruments, and taking appropriate precautions when handling injuries or blood.
The hairdressers were also encouraged to know their HIV status through regular testing and to seek professional medical advice when necessary. The session further emphasised the importance of treating people living with HIV with respect and avoiding discrimination and stigma.
The sensitisation programme was aimed at equipping hairdressers with the knowledge and skills needed to protect themselves, their clients, and the wider community from HIV infection.
