As part of efforts to promote youth employment and sustainable livelihoods, the South Tongu District Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with AV Ventures, a subsidiary of USAID, organised a training programme on Broiler Bird Production for beneficiaries under the Financial Inclusion for the Last Mile Actors (FILMA) Project and their host farmers.
The training was facilitated by Mr Godwin Selase Gbolonyo, Animal Production Officer and Officer-in-Charge of Livestock at the South Tongu District Department of Agriculture. The FILMA Project is financed by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by Agro-Innova.
The programme sought to build the capacity of Last Mile Actors, particularly young women between the ages of 18 and 35, by equipping them with the knowledge and practical skills required to establish and manage profitable broiler enterprises.
Participants were taken through key aspects of broiler production, including:
- Preparation and management of broiler houses.
- Proper brooding and care of day-old chicks.
- Correct feeding and watering practices.
- Timely administration of vaccines and medications.
- Monitoring bird growth and disease management.
- Marketing broiler birds profitably for increased income generation.
The training provided participants with practical insights into modern broiler production techniques aimed at improving productivity, reducing losses, and enhancing profitability. Beneficiaries were encouraged to apply the knowledge acquired to establish sustainable poultry enterprises and contribute to local food production and economic development.
The South Tongu District Department of Agriculture remains committed to supporting farmers, women, and youth through capacity-building initiatives that promote agribusiness development, food security, and job creation within the district.
