President John Dramani Mahama declared Friday, July 10th and Saturday, July 11th, 2026 as national clean-up days under the theme.
“OUR ACTION, OUR FUTURE.”
The directive, also reinforced by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, calls for intensified public cleansing and drainage desilting across the country following weeks of persistent rain and rising flood risks. South Tongu District responded without delay. Day 1 in Sogakope: Community Shows Up Big. Today, South Tongu held the first day of the nationwide exercise right here in Sogakope. And the turnout was massive. Hundreds of residents, traders, youth groups, and transport operators came out to work side by side with us. The goal was simple: deal with the mess left behind by the severe floods of June 29th. We were joined on the ground by officers from the Ghana Navy, Police, Fire Service, Immigration, Prisons, GRA Customs, EPA, and NADMO. Our Assembly Members also led the charge in their areas, mobilising volunteers and keeping things moving. What we focused on: The main job today was clearing choked drains and public spaces that have become a health and flooding hazard.
Desilted deep gutters along major streets; cleared piles of refuse blocking water flow; prepared for disinfection to kill mosquitoes and other pests breeding in stagnant water. The District Environmental Health Unit is following up with post-flood disinfection to keep communities safe. Dignitaries on the ground. We were honoured to host the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, who came with a regional team to monitor progress and encourage the workers. He also presented sanitation tools to the Assembly to support the exercise. Also active on site were: Hon. Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, MP for South Tongu; Hon. Victoria Dzeklo, District Chief Executive; Mr Siibu Imoro Braimah, District Coordinating Director; Mr Samuel Glago, District Director of Environmental Health; staff of the Assembly and Unit Committee members. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and worked directly with the people. What’s next: Phase 1 of clearing major drains and public areas is done.
The MP, Hon. Maxwell Lukutor, expressed his appreciation to personnel from the immigration service, police service, Fire service and Customs for their show of love to the district through this cleanup exercise. Sogakope is a beautiful place, and we must maintain it by keeping it clean. Its location, close to Greater Accra and many other towns, makes its place where officers are not ready to leave. Let us keep Sogakope and South Tongu as a whole clean at all times so that tourists and travellers will continue to come and enjoy what we have.
The Hon. DCE, Hon. Victoria Dzeklo, on the other hand, congratulated the officers for their dedication and patriotism. she encouraged them to keep the fire burning, stressing that together we will succeed. She noted that she always feels safe because of their presence and commended them for the hard work they showed during today’s cleanup exercise.
Tomorrow, Saturday, July 11th, the second phase of the National Sanitation Day exercise will continue tomorrow in Dabala and selected parts of Sogakope as efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment continue.
Every household, neighbourhood, and unit committee is to maintain the momentum. Please clear your domestic drains and help evacuate silt gathered around homes. Small actions in every house add up to a cleaner, safer place.
