SOUTH TONGU DISTRICT ASSEMBLY HELD A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MEETING WITH THE PEOPLE OF TEFLE TO ADDRESS ROAD SAFETY, SAND WINNING, AND DEVELOPMENT CONCERNS.

A community engagement meeting was held on the 11 of June,2026, at the District Assembly Hall with the Tefle community to strengthen collaboration between the District Assembly and residents and to provide a platform for citizens to discuss issues affecting the community’s development. The meeting brought together community members, Assembly officials, security agencies, traditional authorities, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on concerns related to road infrastructure, sand winning activities, environmental protection, and community development.

A major issue raised during the engagement was the deterioration of roads caused by heavy-duty trucks operating within the area. Residents expressed concerns about the impact of these activities on road conditions, while officials explained the complexities and costs involved in road construction and maintenance. The District Engineer was tasked with assessing the affected roads and providing recommendations for possible interventions.

Discussions also focused on sand-winning activities and the need for operators to obtain the necessary permits from relevant regulatory institutions. Participants were reminded to channel grievances through the appropriate authorities and to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

The meeting further highlighted the importance of respecting the rule of law, promoting peaceful coexistence, and fostering constructive relationships among community members, companies, Assembly officials, and security agencies. Concerns regarding police response to incidents were also raised, with assurances that the matter would be addressed.

In addition, stakeholders discussed establishing a Community Development Fund to support local development initiatives through transparent management and community participation. Environmental issues, including the protection of river buffer zones and adherence to planning regulations, were also emphasized.

The engagement concluded with an open forum that allowed residents to ask questions, share concerns, and receive responses from the relevant authorities. Participants agreed on the need for continued dialogue and collaboration to promote sustainable development, environmental protection, and peaceful coexistence in Tefle and the district as a whole.
