World Rivers Day was celebrated on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in Sogakope to commemorate Ghana’s maiden participation in this global event.
water resources commission in collaboration with the District Assembly observed the World Rivers Day, which is on the fourth Sunday of September each year to raise awareness about the importance of river bodies and promote their conservation.
Sogakope serves as the headquarters of the Lower Volta Basin Secretariat, which oversees the Lower Volta Basin stretching from Prampram through to Ho West.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Our Rivers, Our Future.”
The day was marked with a buffer zone restoration exercise involving the planting of trees along the Lower Volta River. This activity serves to stabilize riverbanks and protect water bodies against erosion and pollution.
