
The District Environmental Health Unit of the South Tongu District Assembly organized a screening exercise for all food vendors and drinking bar operators in the district.
This screening exercise was done to ascertain the health status of all the vendors and bar operators before certifying and licensing them to do business in the district. This is also carried out to ensure that, the vendors and bar operators do not transmit diseases like typhoid fever, hepatitis B’ and worm infestation to consumers. The tests carried out on the day were stool examination, urine examination, physical examination. Etc
The food vendors and bar operators who were medically fit were given health certificates by the Assembly valid for one year. On the other hand, the other vendors and bar operators who reacted to suspected cases were denied certificates by the Assembly and would be monitored by the environmental health unit to ensure that they did not sell.
The District Health Environmental Officer advised that, food vendors and bar operators selling in an unhygienic environment must change and adopt a good habit of cleaning their surroundings. He further stated that, periodic monitoring of the surroundings of these vendors and bar operators would be carried out unannounced in the district and any vendor who is found guilty would be charged.
