On the 22nd of August 2023, a group of postgraduate students from the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana Legon embarked on a study tour to the South Tongu District Assembly in Sogakope. The purpose of the visit was to gain insights into various aspects of local governance and community development. The team was received warmly by the District Chief Executive, the District Coordinating Director and other officials of the Assembly.
The study tour began with a welcome remarks from the District Chief Executive (DCE) Hon. Seth Kwasi Agbi, who expressed gratitude to the ISSER students for their interest in learning about the South Tongu District’s governance processes.
The District Planning Officer then delivered a presentation on the profile of the District, giving an overview of its demographic, economic, and social characteristics. This presentation provided the students with a holistic understanding of the district’s development context.
Followed by the District Social Welfare Development Officer who presented on the social intervention programme in the District and the challenges faced in their implementation. This presentation shed light on the efforts being made to improve the welfare of the District’s residents and the obstacles encountered in the process.
Next was the District Agricultural Director who shared information about the agricultural activities in the District. This presentation highlighted the District’s agricultural potential and the initiatives being undertaken to enhance productivity in the sector.
The study tour also included a presentation from the District Engineer, who explained the processes involved in project implementation within the District. This gave the students valuable insights into the planning, execution, and monitoring of development projects at the local level.
Throughout the study tour, the students actively engaged with the presenters, asking questions and seeking clarifications on various topics. This allowed for a fruitful exchange of ideas and knowledge between the ISSER students and the District officials.
The study tour concluded with closing remarks from the District Coordinating Director, who expressed appreciation for the ISSER students’ visit and emphasized the importance of such interactions in promoting learning and collaboration between academia and local government.
Overall, the study tour to the South Tongu District Assembly provided the postgraduate students from ISSER with a valuable opportunity to gain practical insights into local governance and community development processes. It fostered a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the District and allowed for meaningful exchanges between the students and the District officials.
