The South Tongu District Assembly inaugurated its district health committee on Friday 21st July, 2023 and also had its first maiden meeting same day after the inauguration. The District Coordinating Director Mr. Setsoafia Kpenu explained the membership composition of the committee, he mentioned that the committee is made up of eighteen members comprising of twelve (12) substantive members and six (6) Ex-officio members. He explained that only the substantive members have a voting right and also the basis of the District Health committee is rooted in the Ghana health service and teaching Hospitals’ Act 252(1996) Section 24.
The District Chief Executive Hon. Seth Kwasi Agbi declared the committee inaugurated and congratulated them for being selected to be members of the committee. He also encouraged members to take their health issues very seriously.
The District Health Director Miss Mavis Agumeh briefed the committee on some health conditions in the district.
She explained that the issue regarding the teenage pregnancy cannot be handled by the district directorate alone therefore, there is the need for other stakeholders to come on board to curb the menace to its minimal.
The committee suggested the following strategies;
- Sensitization of the communities
- Involvement of community health management committee (CHMCs)
- Education in churches, schools etc.
- Parent should be engaged on the issues of teenage pregnancy
Traditional leaders were also encourage to make by-laws in their communities to instill discipline in the children and their parents in the communities.
In concluding the DCE Hon. Seth Kwasi Agbi thanked all members for a fruitful deliberation and encouraged members to play active roles to ensure that the aim of the committee is achieved.
